Description

I am rehoming my male African Pygmy Hedgehog due to reprioritizing my time. I adopted him from a breeder in Boston, Massachusetts on September 1, 2019 when he was only a few months old. African Pygmy Hedgehogs have a 3-8 year lifespan, which means he could live up to 5 more years. He has been consistently healthy and has not required vet care thus far. We affectionately named him Mr. Banks, although you are welcome to change his name. He has the salt and pepper pinto coloration, which means some of his quills are white, and some are gray, in a splotchy pattern. He is nocturnal and is most often awake at night, so expect to hear him roaming and running at odd hours. He is willing to wake up in the daytime for people who are patient with him; when he is handled, he huffs for two minutes before unravelling out of his ball and exploring. He especially enjoys treats of hedgehog-safe veggies, fruit, and mealworms, and free roaming while supervised both inside and outside when the weather is fair. When he encounters an unfamiliar smell, he engages in self-anointing behavior where he foams at the mouth (this is natural but can be unnerving at first!). Daily care includes replacing his water and filling his food bowl with a high protein cat kibble (we use Blue Wilderness Chicken). Weekly care includes toe nail trimming (head's up: he is not a fan), replacing his substrate (we use aspen shavings), and cleaning his wheel with a scraper and soapy water (hedgehogs poop when they run; it gets messy). Very occasionally, he requires a supervised, shallow bath; bathing too frequently will dry and damage his skin and floating on his back is stressful and unrecommended. He will come with his enclosure, which is a modified white IKEA Detolf glass cabinet (16 3/4" x 14 3/8" x 64 1/8"). This enclosure is considerably larger than the recommended minimum size, and he uses every inch. Inside his enclosure is a large water bowl, small food bowls, a fleece banana that he likes to burrow in, a large plastic tree stump hide, and a 12" silent runner wheel that he loves. The enclosure is currently raised on a white IKEA Kallax bookshelf, which you can purchase if wanted (not required with adoption). I am asking for a rehoming fee to recoup the cost of his enclosure and supplies. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out; I'm happy to provide resources. Pick up in North Madison; can deliver within a reasonable distance.
