Combining a wintry longing with the warmth of a familiar folktale, Humbird stretches between experimental folk and environmental Americana to embrace the unexpected. This music invites a refreshing dissonance into the house, it leaves bread crumbs along the path and reflects light back at the stars. Humbird’s debut album Pharmakon (Aug. 2019) is a “...an absolutely hypnotic listening experience” according to Folk Alley. Atwood Magazine describes it as music wrapped in “gentle rebellion”. Praise for Humbird's recent album release, "Still Life." “Leave it to Minneapolis indie-folk strummer Siri Undlin to find beauty, peace and hope during the tumult of 2020. 'Still Life’ her second full-length album as Humbird, was mostly written and recorded in the house where she waited out quarantine. Songs range from the yearning, Lissie-flavored rocker "Plum Sky" and the raw, George Floyd- and riots-reflecting "May" to one of the most moving COVID postscripts yet, "Pink Moon for John Prine," all rife with Undlin's soul-punchingly poetic style.” – Chris Riemenschneider, Minneapolis Star Tribune The Minneapolis Star Tribune names “Still Life” as one of the Top Ten Albums of 2021. "'Still Life' is beautiful stuff that’s as pellucid as a summer afternoon and as cool as a fall morning." – Edd Hurt, Perfect Sound Forever “'Still Life' is an album to lose yourself in during certain moods, or in others to find comforting details to grasp onto. The album stands alone as its own artifact, which, carefully crafted as it is, has a particular kind of spontaneity.” – Keith Harris, Racket HELLO EMERSON Picked up by Dresden-based K&F Records in 2018, Hello Emerson’s midwestern songwriting resonates internationally – particularly in Germany – with recognition from Rolling Stone Germany, DPA, and Deutschlandfunk Kultur. With comparisons to John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Andrew Bird, Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), and Sufjan Stevens – their debut record was heralded as “a find for the genre” and “the sublime intersection of the best American indie-folk bands.” Sam Emerson Bodary’s songs have proven a maturity beyond his age, with an approach “so round, clever, and grown-up that he could easily be fifteen years older.” Now at 25, Bodary leans into How to Cook Everything, Hello Emerson’s second record with K&F Records and first with Columbus’ indie Anyway Records. Their sophomore effort, How to Cook Everything, solidifies their reputation as an earnest, humble, and insistent voice in independent midwestern music. With contributions from 50 local musicians, Hello Emerson crystallizes life in a big town/small city amidst personal and political tensions – confirming, denying, and otherwise complicating midwestern stereotypes within each narrative-focused song.
