Description
A three-part mental health workshop series for middle schoolers. Calling all middle schoolers! 6th-8th graders are invited to join our three-part mental health workshop. Each of the 3 sessions will dive into different topics relating to mental health including: understanding and destigmatizing mental health, debunking myths, supporting our friends and ourselves through challenging times, and how to set boundaries for our well-being. Sessions will be hosted by trained professionals from the JCC East Bay, JFCS SF, Peninsula, Marin, & Sonoma counties, JFCS East Bay, as well as local teen mentors. Check out the info below, or click on the Register button to sign your teen up for all 3 sessions. Note: Registration includes all three sessions (March 13, 20, 27) and a vegetarian lunch. Covid Protocols: All JCC staff are fully vaccinated (including boosters). All attendees will have to show proof of vaccination (including boosters, if eligible) prior to entering and remain masked throughout the event. Attendees will be able to remove their masks when eating/drinking, which will take place outdoors. SUNDAY, MARCH 13 - Wellness 101: Debunking Myths & Destigmatizing Mental Health Linda Karlin, MSW, MPH, MA (she/her), Director of Youth Programs and Services, Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, and Sonoma Counties Linda has over 30 years of experience working with youth of all ages. She brings her expertise in teen mental health to her role at JFCS where she directs Jewish service-learning, leadership, and career exploration programs across the Bay Area. She has an extensive background in the fields of social work, public health, and education. Linda takes care of her mental health by painting rocks, making others laugh, and snuggling her super cute dog! Margolit Sands, MEd (she/her), YouthFirst Program and Social Media Coordinator (Marin), Jewish Family and Children's Services of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin, and Sonoma Counties In her role at JFCS, Margolit supports teens in developing their leadership skills and facilitating Jewish service-learning opportunities that address community needs. She has been working with youth for over 10 years in a variety of settings---from the classroom to the urban farm. She is passionate about earth-based Judaism and has had the pleasure of working at Camp Tawonga, Urban Adamah, and Wilderness Torah. You might even recognize her as the former director of JCC East Bay's Oakland Afterschool Program! Margolit takes care of her mental health by reading, drinking water, crafting, and dancing! SUNDAY, MARCH 20 - Supporting Friends & Ourselves Through Hardship Sarah Guzick MFT (she/her), Jewish Family and Community Services of the East Bay Sarah is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who has been based in the East Bay since 2011. Prior to working at the Jewish Family Community Services of the East Bay, Sarah spent six years working in the Psychiatry department at Kaiser Permanente, two years leading social skills groups at Oakland Hebrew Day School and two years working with youth in the foster care and juvenile justice system in Alameda county. Prior to becoming a therapist, Sarah's background is in teaching, sketch comedy, improvisation, theatre, film, creative writing, directing, and producing. SUNDAY, MARCH 27 - Being Ourselves: Understanding Boundaries & Self-Care Brianna Sommer, MSc (she/her), Director of Youth & Teen Programs, JCC East Bay Brianna graduated with an MSc in Outdoor, Environmental, and Sustainability Education from the University of Edinburgh, focusing her dissertation on Eco-Jewish education. After moving to the Bay in 2018, Brianna worked as a Lead Outdoor Mentor with Wilderness Torah and as the Director of Club J, the fourth and fifth grade afterschool program, as well as the Camp Director with JCC East Bay. Her current role at the JCC as Director of Youth and Teen Programs continues her responsibility to cultivate a vibrant community, serving and engaging youth. She is an avid nature photographer, explorer, dancer, and an enthusiastic krav maga-er. The JCC East Bay stands for equal rights and safety for people of all backgrounds and faiths.
