Description

Press release from the City of Richfield: June 19, 2020 Juneteenth is the oldest, nationally-celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19 when, in 1865, those who were enslaved in Galveston, Texas, finally found out that their emancipation had been made formal two and a half years earlier with the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth asks us to consider the promises of freedom that have not yet been fully realized in the United States, and it reminds us of the work that still needs to be done to create an equitable society.
