Midwives and Maternal Health in the African American Community
The William Jewell College Nursing Program and Garrison School Cultural Center of Liberty invite you to a Women's History Month Program, "Midwives and Maternal Health in the African American Community," Sunday, March 27th, in the campus Pryor Learning Center at 2:00 pm. The program will celebrate the life and legacy of Lucy Jacobs Stewart, a Liberty, Missouri Midwife born in 1854. Lucy is one of more than 750 African Americans interred in unmarked graves in the segregated sections of Fairview and New Hope Cemeteries. Local Kansas City actor Shirley Johnson will perform an reenactment of Lucy Stewart. Guest speakers are Midwife Kimberly Lartey, CPM, JD and Dr. Marvia Jones, Kansas City's Health Department Director.
An original work of Lucy Jacobs Stewart will be unveiled by the artist, Brianna Woods.
Brianna Woods, of Oklahoma City, is passionate about artistry and investing in wellness for her community to advance economically. “My mission is to promote empowerment through wellness, authenticity and the arts.”
1 Contact Hour Continuing Education Unit will be provided for Licensed healthcare professionals.
