STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — The Stafford County fire department received an award from the governor this week. The 2021 Fire Service Awards recognized the Stafford County Department of Fire and Rescue for "outstanding fire department response."
The Governor's Fire Services Awards began in 2002 and recognize the work of fire departments around the state. Officials announced this year's awards at the annual Virginia Fire Chiefs Association and Rescue Conference in Virginia Beach on Wednesday.
"I am pleased to recognize these outstanding fire service professionals," Governor Glenn Youngkin said in a news release. "I'm so grateful to Virginia's fire service personnel for risking their lives every day to protect us. I'm proud to honor and thank Virginia's first responders and support staff for their dedication to the Commonwealth."
The awards recognized Stafford County firefighters for their response to a commercial vehicle crash in April 2021.
When they arrived on the scene, first responders found a large flatbed truck crashed into the back of a tractor-trailer. The driver of the flatbed truck was trapped and pinned, officials said.
A first responder entered the truck's cab, assessed the driver, and administered first aid. Other emergency personnel pulled the driver from the truck, and he received treatment from medical personnel from Stafford County and Fauquier County. They then flew him to Fairfax Hospital for further treatment.
"After a lengthy hospital stay, numerous surgeries and family support, the patient was released from the hospital," officials said in a news release announcing the award.
