NEWARK, NJ — Police have apprehended a man who allegedly fired gunshots near a school in Newark earlier this week, authorities announced Friday. Kevin M. Winston, 35, of Parsippany, was arrested in connection with a Feb. 22 shooting that took place just outside of American History High School. Although there was no threat to the school, it was locked down as a safety precaution, Newark police said. No injuries were reported, police said. The Newark Department of Public Safety released the following statement about the incident: "Just after 2 p.m., police responded to a call of shots fired at Montgomery Street near Somerset Street. Responding officers were flagged down by a male victim who had been robbed and assaulted in Jersey City by suspects after a motor vehicle collision. The victim continued to follow the suspects into Newark. The male driver exited the suspect vehicle in the area of Montgomery Street and Somerset Street, and began shooting multiple rounds at the victim's vehicle. The victim was not shot." Newark detectives investigating the shooting, with the assistance of their peers in Jersey City, later identified Winston as a suspect. He was arrested yesterday in Jersey City without incident, police said. Winston was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, criminal mischief and certain persons prohibited from weapon possession. Additional charges are pending in connection with the robbery and assault that occurred in Jersey City, police said. Newark Public Safety Director Brian O'Hara commended local officers for their role in the arrest, and thanked the Jersey City Police Department for assisting with the investigation.
