SAN RAFAEL, CA — The body of a hit-and-run victim found on a Marin freeway over the weekend has been identified as a 21-year-old Guatemala man who was living in Sunnyvale, authorities said. Authorities believe Erick Omar Gonzalez Vasquez was fatally struck by at least one vehicle while he was trying to walk away from a solo vehicle crash late Saturday night, the Marin County Sheriff's Office said. Motorists reported seeing a body at 11:53 p.m. Saturday just before the approach to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Around five minutes earlier, a solo crash was reported on Interstate 580 westbound near the San Quentin exit. The vehicle involved in the crash was previously seen speeding erratically across the Richmond - San Rafael Bridge, the Sheriff's Office said. "The vehicle was discovered by other motorists with damage consistent with having been involved in collision with a fixed object and was unoccupied," the Sheriff's Office said. "At the time of this writing and which remains under investigation, it is not known if the vehicle was occupied by one or more persons and who was the operator of the vehicle." A driver stopped in the lane and put their vehicle hazard lights on to prevent other cars from striking the body. All bridge traffic in both directions was shut down for about an hour while the CHP investigated. Gonzalez Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonzalez Vasquez had no identification on him, delaying efforts to identify him, authorities said. "The Marin County Sheriff's Office and personnel of the Coroner Division offers our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Gonzalez Vasquez," the agency said. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the California Highway Patrol at (415) 924-1100. — Bay City News contributed to this report
