Here are the top five stories today in Sacramento: Kelli Evans and Tim Taylor own Evans Farming in Live Oak. The cold snap is freezing their almonds during blooming season, killing them before they ever make it to harvest. The couple is working around the clock to try to fight the frost with irrigation. Mel Machado at Blue Diamond Growers says the sub-freezing temperatures are coming at a terrible time. Almond growers already dealing with the drought are now dealing with this latest setback. "It's creating one after another economic impact on us that we are hoping, everyone hopes we can recover from," said Evans. Almond growers say it will take a week or two to assess the total impacts. (CBS Sacramento)A Sacramento author is helping parents approach big issues with young children. Crystel Patterson is a KCRA 3 Community Champion, helping to make our community a more inclusive place. Her mission is to get families talking about race. She was inspired by tough questions from her son when he was 8 years old. Her books are about everyday superheroes like scientists and firefighters. They're also about finding the beauty in being different, and providing children with positive role models. (KCRA3)The 34th annual Sacramento Black Expo was held Saturday at Sacramento State University in celebration of Black History Month. "Black Expo is an exposition of opportunity," said Dr. Rick Warren, founder and CEO of the Sacramento Black Expo. The event's grand finale is the Black History Legacy Awards Gala on Sunday, Feb. 27 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The purpose of the black-tie event is to honor Black Women Of Excellence. It will feature a red carpet, dinner, and a live concert by R&B recording artist Chante Moore. Those interested must purchase a ticket to attend the gala. Tickets start at $50. For more information, visit the official Black Expo website. (ABC10)The City of Elk Grove will start operating new traffic signals with a flashing yellow left-turn arrow. The signal lights will be situated at the north and southbound intersections of Wymark Drive and Elk Grove Boulevard. The flashing or blinking yellow arrow means that you may enter the intersection, with caution. It indicates that left turns are permitted, but the driver must yield to all oncoming traffic. When the flashing yellow light is not on, the traffic signal works the same as a traditional traffic signal. The flashing yellow arrow not only improves the flow of traffic at intersections but it also allows more vehicles to pass through. (Elk Grove Tribune)The City of Citrus Heights will hold a public workshop on March 3 at City Hall where community members will have an opportunity to provide input on how boundaries for the city's five council districts should be drawn. The workshop will be held on Thursday, March 3, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at 6360 Fountain Square Drive. A posting on the city's website says says attendees "will have an opportunity to learn more about the redistricting process, review current district compositions, and provide feedback on where district lines should be drawn." (ecosacramento.net)More than 600 volunteers walked for miles after dark on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 to count people experiencing homelessness throughout Sacramento County. The biennial count coincided with record-breaking cold temperatures. The volunteers all received prior training, and they met at several starting points throughout the county to pick up lists of known encampments and maps with routes to follow. It will take some time to collate all the information collected over the two nights of the PIT Count, officials said. Sacramento Steps Forward said it plans to issue a report detailing the data by late spring or early summer.
