Here are the top three stories in Des Moines today: Des Moines had a nearly 50-year record for snowfall on Thursday. The National Weather Service says Des Moines received 5.2 inches of snow on Thursday. This topped the previous single-day record of 5.1 inches from 1975. (KCRG)After Thursday's snowfall, Des Moines residents experienced a slippery commute on Friday. Iowa State Patrol troopers reportedly responded to 51 crashes around the Des Moines metro area yesterday. The Iowa Department of Transportation worked throughout the day to clear the snow-covered roads, with hundreds of plows out and about to improve driving conditions.On Thursday, a Des Moines man was arrested on a Dallas County warrant for third-degree sexual abuse and supplying alcohol to a minor. Diego Balmaceda-Balmaceda, 23 of Des Moines, was charged in connection with a January incident in which he allegedly raped a juvenile female and supplied alcohol to an underage person. The incident reportedly took place in the parking lot of a RecPlex at 6500 Grand Ave. Balmaceda-Balmaceda's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Mar. 7 in Dallas County District Court.
