Press release from the City of San Antonio: Thursday, February 17, 2022 CONTACT: Stacey Norton, Department of Arts & Culture 210-207-6960, [email protected] SAN ANTONIO (February 17, 2022) – The steps of Centro de Artes Gallery, in Historic Market Square, now feature a large purple and blue hued paleta sculpture titled Sabor del Mercado by San Antonio Artist David Blancas. The City of San Antonio's Department of Arts & Culture unveiled the artwork for all to enjoy just in time for Spring Break and warmer temperatures. In addition to being an accomplished mural artist with works throughout San Antonio, Blancas has created over 50 renditions of this beloved frozen treat. "Paletas are an integral part of spring and summertime in San Antonio," said Blancas. I create paleta sculptures as a nod to childhood memories of chasing down the paleta man." The approximately 10-foot artwork was created with acrylic on wood with resin. It will be a permanent icon that welcomes visitors into the Centro de Artes Gallery, which is free to the public. Currently on display at the gallery is New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program Exhibition – Round 2. The opening reception for this exhibit is Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at 6 – 9 p.m. "This vibrant sculpture is debuting at the perfect time, as we prepare to highlight the works of 34 San Antonio artists representing 12 different countries," said Department of Arts & Culture Interim Executive Director Krystal Jones. "Sabor del Mercado will be a visual identifier for Centro de Artes and the Historic Market Square, which includes a wide variety of culinary experiences." Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio's Zona Cultural on the grounds of Historic Market Square, Centro de Artes Gallery is a two-story exhibit space dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience with a focus on South Texas through local and regional art, history and culture and showcasing Latino artists and Latino-themed artworks.
