(247Sports) The Mount Diablo Unified School District voted Wednesday evening on a controversial plan to cut programs. The district's cuts for next school year would include eliminating music programs for 4th grade, eliminating Diablo Day Program – an alternative school for high-risk kids, and eliminating librarians from middle and high school libraries. It's all in an effort to save money and balance the budget. In a report presented to the board earlier this month, the district said it was operating at a deficit of about $20 million per school year, partly due to declining enrollment. The vote came hours after parents and teachers held a rally before the board meeting asking members to save the programs. Hundreds of people gathered at Monte Gardens Elementary in Concord before marching over to district headquarters. (KION)During their PE classes at Antioch High, teachers Lisa Cuza and Shannon Emerson had many young women asking for items like toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products, and the like. Last fall they started a little area in the girls' locker room dubbed Lady Panther Pantry, which they stocked with basic toiletries like the items above along with hair ties, shampoo, lip balm, hand sanitizer, razors and toothbrushes. They initially received donations through various organizations, including the Bethel Island Woman's Club. However, with half the school year down, so were supplies. Word spread about the need and within two weeks, the Antioch High School coordinator's office overflowed with donations from staff and community.
