Press release from Akron Public Schools: 02/25/2022 For part of their Black History Month learning, students at Helen Arnold CLC have now learned a great deal about the person after whom their elementary school was named. Principal LaMonica Davis tells us they hosted what she called "a phenomenal salute to Helen Arnold today." The guest speaker this morning bears strong resemblance to Helen Arnold, the late Akron Public Schools superintendent who was Akron's first Black woman to win her bid to serve on the Akron Board of Education. Danielle Arnold, who is part of the APS security team, captivated her young audience with many stories about her grandmother. Helen Arnold was a licensed cosmetologist, mother of nine and a PTA volunteer who ended up becoming board president. "We want to thank Danielle for sharing her memories and Helen Arnold's legacy with our students," Davis added. This press release was produced by Akron Public Schools.
