Arrest Made After University Mall Shooting That Injured Four

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Investigators say a man has been charged after mishandling a handgun, which went off and injured four people in University Mall last Saturday. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletter and breaking news alerts The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Friday afternoon said Tyrus Jacquez Jones, 24, was walking in the mall while in possession of a pistol Saturday, before he "negligently handled" the pistol, resulting in it firing into the floor. Captain Jack Kennedy, the commander of the multiagency unit, said the resulting bullet fragments struck and injured four different people. Jones then fled the scene, but was taken into custody after all of the possible suspects were located and questioned, leading police to their present conclusion. He was charged with four counts of third degree assault, with a total bond set at $12,000. He remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail as of the publication of this story.
