Beginner, Middle-aged Bass Player Looking To Play for Fun

I've been messing around with a bass guitar for years, but I still only have beginner/novice/fundamental skills. I've discovered that I just don't have much musical aptitude; it seems to take me ten times as long to learn a song compared to my friends who can actually play instruments. The good news is that (1) I am willing to put in the extra time to learn the songs that everyone else in the group wants to play, and (2) I find playing music with friends to be a blast! I'm a teacher, parent, husband, home-project-guy, and a bike nut, so I don't have a lot of time for playing right now.
