Donald Trump happened. He is a dictator want to be and his minions swallow his schtick hook line and sinker. His regular referrals to the idea of staying in office beyond two terms makes clear is that Trump has little understanding of or care for what would loosely be described as accepted norms of a democratic society. He was elected president without ever having served in or run for any previous office, and his actions since taking over the presidency have often nodded toward authoritarianism. He’s praised dictators from North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to Russia’s Vladimir Putin to the Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte. He’s sought to discredit the media seeking to cover him and his administration, openly telling supporters not to believe what they read or see. After China abolished term limites said that the United States "should give it a shot someday". In many of his speeches, Trump said he wanted to serve more than 2 terms as president. Trump has said he will ‘negotiate’ third term because he’s ‘entitled’ to it. The 22nd amendment to the constitution, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four-term presidency, prohibits a president from seeking more than two terms in office. To change it, Trump would have to whip the votes of a two-thirds majority of both houses of Congress or have two-thirds of state legislatures call a constitutional convention, both unlikely propositions given modern hyper-partisanship.
