SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — Several Shaker Heights institutions will be closed because of new coronavirus, COVID-19. The virus has spread throughout the state and there are now confirmed cases in at least six counties. "We are all experiencing significant negative impacts on our everyday lives as a result of recent events," Mayor David Weiss said. He said his job as mayor, first and foremost, is to protect the lives of Shaker Heights residents. To that end, he would encourage aggressive social distancing measures. Digital collections will still be accessible to patrons. The libraries are fine free, so guests do not need to worry about returning checked-out materials until the libraries re-open. Shaker Heights Schools Like all schools across Ohio, the Shaker Heights Schools will be on a state-mandated three-week break through at least early April. Classes ended on Friday and staffers are determining how to proceed with remote instruction. Food services will continue throughout the district. Shaker Heights Recreation Center The following programs for adults will be canceled: Taiji Quan and Qigong, ballroom dancing and Agata's bootcamp conditioning. The following preschool programs will be canceled: aquatics. The following preschool programs will be moved: bitty basketball, mini-kickers soccer, micro-soccer spring, magical munchkins, tiny movers and star shiners. Youth programs associated with the following sports are canceled: basketball, football, golf, soccer and tennis. Youth softball will start after May 1. School age care is canceled during the Shaker Schools' break. All rink programs are postpone and Parents Night Out is canceled and guests will receive a full refund. More information on impacted programs can be found on thefacility's website. Shaker Heights City Hall Most city meetings between now and April 30 are either canceled or postponed. Only five meetings will go on as currently planned, Mayor David Weiss said on Wednesday. However, those meetings will be held with changes to address social distancing. Here are the meetings that will still be held in coming weeks: Architectural Board of Review: March 16 and April 6City Council: March 14 (9 a.m. special meeting); March 30 (regular meeting); and April 27 (regular meeting)Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals: April 7Updates will be made on the city's meetings calendar.
