Avian Flu Detected on 3rd Dubois County Farm

By Sarah Kuper, WNIN February 25, 2022 The highly pathogenic avian flu has struck another Dubois County turkey farm. Since February 9th when a Dubois County turkey farm reported suspicions of avian flu, animal health officials and the USDA have been following the spread of the virus. But despite containment measures like testing, quarantines and euthanizing flocks, on February 15th a second Dubois County farm reported cases and on Wednesday, yet another farm will have to euthanize its flock after the bird flu has been detected. Additionally, two farms in Greene County have been affected. The Indiana Board of Animal Health estimates that more than 154,000 Indiana commercial turkeys have been euthanized so far. While the H5N1 pathogen wreaks havoc on Indiana turkey farmers and has international ramifications for poultry exports from the US, officials say poultry products are still safe to eat and no cases of human infection have been reported. Officials are urging any "hobby poultry farmers" to schedule testing of their birds. WNIN is the NPR/PBS affiliate in Evansville, Indiana.
