JOLIET, IL — Several Joliet police officers were sent to Joliet West High School on Friday morning after a 17-year-old boy attacked a 42-year-old teacher and ripped the police radio from one of the officers trying to make the arrest, authorities said. The 17-year-old boy was taken into custody at the River Valley Juvenile Justice Center on two felony charges of aggravated battery and one count of resisting arrest. The school violence happened at 9:25 a.m., according to Joliet police. "It was determined that after observing a disturbance between the juvenile and another student in a hallway, the teacher attempted to intervene," police spokesman Dwayne English announced. "While the teacher intervened to end the disturbance, the juvenile struck the teacher once in the face. The juvenile continued to threaten the teacher and was then escorted to the office by school security." The teacher did not require medical attention, police said. While officers tried to interview the boy back at the school offices, he became upset and belligerent and refused to put his hands behind his back and follow orders given by officers, English said. "While resisting arrest, the juvenile ripped a radio from the vest of an officer. Officers were then able to place him into custody without further incident," English announced.
