Description

Press release from the City of Northfield: August 7, 2020 Starting on Monday, August 10, Motor Vehicle Services staff will resume service to walk-in customers from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with no interruption. "We hired and trained a part-time motor vehicle specialist and are hiring another temporary part-time employee to work through the high demand, cover all shifts, and enhance our customer's DMV experience," said Brenda Angelstad, the City of Northfield's finance director. "We're catching up on the backlog of renewals due to the COVID-19 closure and we're seeing a decrease in people waiting in line." Northfield DMV office hours were reduced during the months of March, April and May. People do not need to rush to renew their driver's license. Minnesota law automatically extends the expiration of any driver's license, ID card or permit that would have expired during COVID-19 peacetime emergency to the month after the peacetime emergency ends. The current peace emergency ends August 12, which means people have until September 30, 2020 to renew. As a reminder, drivers have until the last day of the expiration month to renew their vehicle registration. Drivers must display registration stickers by the 10th of the following month. Also, the deadline to obtain a Real ID is now October 1, 2021 and the criteria for identification proof was broadened. When visiting City Hall, employees and the public must follow CDC and state guidelines including maintaining physical distance of at least 6 feet apart, using facial coverings over your nose and mouth, and staying home if sick.
