FALLS TOWNSHIP, PA — The Falls Township Police Department was given a Recognition Award for their recent implementation of the HAAS Safety Alert System on Friday, Feb. 25. Mike Pacana of the Delaware Valley Trust presented the award to Police Chief Nelson Whitney and other members of the department "for implementing innovative technology to help improve the safety and risk to employees," according to a statement from the department. Waste Management, who funded the new program, was also there to present the police chief with their most recent donation. The safety alert system allows local residents to receive real-time digital alerts when law enforcement vehicles are active nearby. One of the ways the system will be of help to both residents and police is that it will aid drivers in obeying Pennsylvania's Move Over laws. "We're excited to add another level of protection for our officers in order to make sure they are able to do their jobs as safely as possible," Chief Whitney said back in January when the program was announced. "This service connects and protects our officers in the field and the drivers around them by giving motorists extra time to see us, slow down, and move over safely. Waze is a free-to-use app, so we encourage drivers to get advanced warning of our presence when we're actively responding."
