SHAKER HEIGHTS, OH — The Shaker Heights Schools plan to reopen school buildings on Jan. 4, 2021. In a message to the community, Shaker Heights Superintendent David Glasner said he expects students in grades K-4 to be in school five days a week. Students in grades 5-8 will begin an alternating weeks hybrid schedule, while high school students will have an alternating days schedule. Families who opt to remain in online-only instruction will remain online only. Glasner said the district will continue to evaluate COVID-19 data, both within the schools and within the community. As of Thursday, there were 13 active COVID-19 cases among students and 11 active cases among staff. "The overall health of our school community will directly impact the District's ability to resume onsite learning. We are aware that other local school districts have faced staffing challenges as a result of positive/presumed positive COVID-19 cases and quarantines," Glasner said. "We want to avoid similar challenges." Glasner urged Shaker Heights residents to continue wearing masks, washing hands, practice physical distancing and avoid unnecessary travel. "We will keep you informed should our plans to resume in-person learning change. We also will share a survey with families in the coming days to help shape our instructional plans for the second semester, which begins January 19," Glasner said.
