DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MI — Mayor Bill Bazzi announced a new Dearborn Heights Police Chief on Thursday after unexpectedly relieving Chief Mark Meyers of his duties. Jerrod S. Hart was named the city's new police chief. He has 26 years of experience with the Novi Police Department, where he served in numerous patrol, investigative and leadership positions. In 2012, he was promoted to the department's Assistant Chief of Police until 2017. "I am confident Chief Hart's impressive history, coupled with his community-oriented leadership focus will make him an effective leader for the Dearborn Heights Police Department, in addition to an effective community-minded ambassador for our residents," Bazzi said. Hart will begin his new role as police chief on Monday. In the meantime, Bazzi appointed an interim chief to the department. "I am excited to join the women and men who serve the City of Dearborn Heights with honor, compassion and dedication," Hart said. "As a contemporary law enforcement professional with over 30 years' experience, my immediate focus will be ensuring the public's safety, assessing internal and external customer service, officer wellness initiatives, and building trust with staff and community members." The city did not provide any details on why Meyers was let go. He joined the department in August 1997 and was promoted to become the department's 14th chief in May 2020.
