Description
(I’m reposting this ad from last year. I had an overwhelming response but wasn’t able to put it together at that time. Since then I’ve found some great players and it’s really coming together. Still looking for a few peeps though so read on……! )
I’ve wanted to form a kind of sweaty 60’s/70’s heavy groove Latin/Afro-soul/Cuban/Ethiopian type jazz band for a while and the time is now.
(The other guys have been turning me on to some modern stuff like Yussef Dayes, Vels Trio, etc, so just think rare groove rhythm with jazz horns on top and improvised passages throughout)
The band is:
Guitar
Bass
Keys (Rhoads or organ)
Drums
Percussionist (shakers, blocks, bongos, etc)
And:
Trumpet
Baritone and alto sax
Flute
Trombone?
Really mostly looking for a trumpet, baritone sax, and percussionist. But hit me up if you play something else and are interested
The band has a weekly practice schedule (Thursday nights for now). We’re writing songs now and have several sketches ready to be colored in! Planning to record once the tunes are solid and start playing out.
Age doesn’t matter to me (I’m 39) and I’m not looking for Superpro genius skill, just know your instrument and your parts and be ambitious and willing to work. (Improvisation skills are desired) Lets build the toughest sounding heavy soul/jazz songs this side of the Mississippi!
Some influences:
Fela Kuti
Mulatu Astatke
Ikebe Shakedown
Budos Band
Menehan Street Band
Yussef Dayes
Vels Trio
