The kick drum is thumping in an offset rhythm to your beating heart and the bass is thundering vibrations through your entire body, tuning you into the stage and every other person standing in the crowd. Lightning strikes in your mind as dueling guitar riffs peel away the fog and a keyboard bubble floats loftily like clouds over it all. Then come the lyrics, messages of connection and grace. Ease flows through the entire scene and you're awoken by the tingle of resonance on your skin. Do you feel it? This is Iya Terra. Iya Terra means higher ground, which they seem to find everywhere. Whether it be the top of the latest charts or next year's festival billing, Iya Terra is constantly climbing. Bringing a modern-conscious approach to songwriting, Iya Terra crafts messages in love & respect. Currently based out of LA, and with members hailing from the west coast, SLC, and Vegas, their powerful rhythm section provides the heartbeat over which scintillating guitars and soothing vocals float melodies of universal resonance. Iya Terra released their first EP in 2014, then a debut album "Full Circle" in 2015. Then came the album that aligned the stars, "Sacred Sound" debuted at #1 on the reggae charts and the band's following has swelled ever since. Their third full length release and second reggae chart topping album "Coming to Light" followed in 2019. Kicking off 2021 with a new album Ease & Grace, they show no sign of slowing down. The new tunes are produced by EN Young and feature reggae hard-hitters Tribal Seeds, Trevor Hall, Mike Love, Bobby Lee of SOJA, Alborosie, and the legendary David Hinds of Steel Pulse. A Filipino native who moved with her family to Hawaii as a youngster, Camile (Eli-Mac spelled backwards) Velasco was a rebel who combined island music/roots with R&B and hip-hop. Eli-Mac’s musical and fashion style comes from growing up in the ‘90s listening to Lauryn Hill, Salt N Pepa, TLC and Erykah Badu along with hip-hop icons Wu Tang Clan, Nas, TupacShakur and Mobb Deep. She shared her mother’s love of ‘70s disco and ‘80s dance/pop while her father turned her on to ‘60s classic rock and jazz from The Eagles and The Doors to Billie Holiday. At the tender age of 18, Eli landed a spot on the hit TV show American Idol as a Top 10 finalist. Eli-Mac continued on in the music industry, signing with several major and independent labels, such as Motown Records and indie hip-hop label Up Above Records to now Island Empire. She discovered her sound by combining her three favorite genres – roots reggae, hip-hop and R&B – creating the groundbreaking Dubstop with subsequent dub-wise, rootsyrecords like “Can’t Get Enough,” and “Roots Girl” produced by her current partner Louie Castle of noted San Diego-based reggae band Tribal Seeds. By rebranding herself as Eli-Mac in 2014, Eli has been able to step outside herself – and the limitations put on her by others – to emerge as a flamboyant, sensual performer, not an alter ego, as she insists, but a truer version of her real self. “Eli-Mac is an extension of who I really am,” she explains. “I am proud to incorporate my upbringing in Hawai’i into my music,” she says. “That culture remains important to me.” Songs like the slinky “Mr. Sensi,” represent Eli-Mac’s unique urban island style. In 2008, Eli-Mac recorded a version of Bob Marley’s “Guava Jelly,” produced by his son Stephen Marley, at Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica, which earned her the Hawaii Music Awards’ Single of the Year. In 2020 she won the Island Music Awards’ Best Music Video for her song “Roots Girl” and Female Artist of the Year. She has also opened for the likes of her idol Lauryn Hill, Sublime, Shaggy, Soja, J Boog and Common Kings, as well as appearances at the One Love Festival, Cali Roots and many more. He made the move out to Los Angeles, CA to pursue Cydeways as more than just a basement project. He later found residency in Santa Barbara, CA and overtime solidified his band, rounded out by drummer Casey Kernohan, Ryan Loui on Bass, Jeremy Baker on guitar, Trevor Buckingham as producer/engineer with Dana Shoults on keys/co-production. The group eventually caught the attention of Law Records and in speaking with Law’s Yesod Williams, he shares how Cydeways wound up on his radar, telling The Pier: “I was podcasting Joe D. from Iration and he mentioned Cydeways to me. He’s friends with Dustin. After a little time, Hawaiian time that is, I finally reached out to Dustin. He sent me a track he had coincidentally done featuring another mutual friend in the Rhymesayers artists, Grieves, serendipity?
