Raising Poultry Series - Processing Chickens Choosing the Best Chickens for your Space Thursday, March 17, 2022 6:30-7:30pm Denise Natoli Brooks, CSUE ANR Educator, SE OH, will discuss : Many breed options are available when building a small-scale poultry flock. We'll consider bird size, egg laying, egg color and size, meat quality, cold hardiness, coop needs, pasture suitability and behavior to best fit your goals. Beginning Poultry Farming Thursday, March 24, 2022 6:30-7:30pm Phil Hollingshead, CSUE ANR Educator, SE OH, will lead: Program discussion will cover meat versus egg production, breeds to consider for each, housing, and feeding. Processing Chickens Thursday, March 31, 2022 6:30-7:30pm Andrea and John Hancock with Happy Wife Acres will present the basics of chicken processing. A discussion of when to process, the psychology of processing, and the various steps including dispatching, scalding, plucking, evisceration, and preservation. They will show some of their equipment, including dispatch cones and knives, and will show a short video of how they process chickens. Laws as they apply to backyard chicken growers will be discussed. No chickens will be processed during the course.
