Sunday afternoon with two very talented artists sponsored by Piedmont Folkways, The Sharpe House and The Chapel on Walnut Wayne Henderson and Clay Lunsford Concert Sunday March 13, 2022 Piedmont Folkways is pleased to announce that we’re presenting Wayne Henderson and Clay Lunsford in concert here in Statesville on Sunday March 13, 2022. Wayne Henderson and Clay Lunsford are two of the absolute best “thumb and finger pick” style guitarists that you will ever hear. Wayne’s a world-class musician, internationally as a luthier and instrument maker for Country, Bluegrass and Rock stars and a storyteller. His instruments are coveted by musicians and collectors, and his contributions to traditional music are recognized worldwide, including the National Heritage Award. Clay Lunsford, a native of Iredell County, grew up in a musical family and everyone sang and played. traces his family’s musical history back to his great uncle, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, who, while known as the Minstrel of the Appalachians. Bascom wrote such standard mountain songs as “Good Old Mountain Dew” and “I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground.” Several years ago, they combined forces on a duo CD, called “Thumb to Thumb: The Museum Recordings.” Henderson and Lunsford decided to record a duo album so they could highlight their distinctive styles of playing the guitar with a thumb pick and fingers, especially in a day and age when most good guitar players use a flat pick. Clay is a thumb picker, a Chet Atkins/Jerry Reed-type picker admired as a kid used a thumb pick. Henderson’s influences growing up includes everyone from Maybelle Carter to Merle Travis and Lester Flatt, and they all used a thumb pick. But the music Wayne wanted to play were his dad’s fiddle tunes and that required a flat pick. Wayne’s influences included Merle Travis and the guitar players he knew when he was a kid, Maybelle Carter and Mr. E.C. Ball and they all used a thumb pick. The music Wayne wanted to play, his dad’s fiddle tunes required a flat pick, so Wayne developed his very own, unique style, grounded in the use of a thumb and two finger picks. What makes their performances magical, is the fact that even though Henderson and Lunsford play in a similar manner, their picking technique varies significantly, so they blend in a nice way. Wayne Henderson and Clay Lunsford is a concert you don’t want to miss!
