BATAVIA, IL — After signaling their intent to bring all students back to school following Labor Day, officials from Batavia Public School District 101 announced this week that most middle and high school students will start the new school year learning from home. Officials said they reverted to the full-time remote learning plan for the start of the 2020-21 school year due to the "complexity" of making student schedules and because teachers felt some aspects of the district's return-to-school plan needed to be adjusted. The new school year is set to start Aug. 19. Elementary schools will operate on a hybrid schedule with two groups of students splitting their instruction time between the classroom and home. Superintendent Lisa Hichens and Batavia Education Association President Todd Swanson said in a letter to parents that full-time remote learning would not be a "viable option" for elementary students because "our youngest learners need more coaching, more supervision, (and) less screen time."
