Venturing Crew 167 is hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony involving the Pack, Troop, and Crew. Venturing Crew 167 is hosting a Flag Retirement Ceremony involving the Pack, Troop, and Crew. A flag retirement ceremony is an important event as it honors the American flag as the symbol of our country and all the hopes, dreams, and people it represents. This ceremony honors and upholds the ideals of the scout oath and law. Our event is in partnership with our home location Good Shepherd United Methodist Church and will be held in the parking lot at 2 pm on March 19th, 2022. The purpose of this event is to properly and respectfully retire American flags that are worn beyond repair and no longer fit to serve the nation. The U.S. Flag Code says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” In today's world, we need to show America that the youth of this country understand and have respect for the generations that came before us, and those who are still fighting today. This ceremony is important for us to show respect for the flag and military. Letting people see how we as scouts can teach others how to properly and respectfully dispose of the American flag. We have the opportunity to introduce others to the ideals of Scouting and demonstrate good Scouting behavior that upholds the scout oath and law. The Flag Retirement Ceremony will include the use of a small fire pit to burn cloth flags. The scouts are also working on proper destruction of synthetic flags, which release toxic gases when burned and are therefore cut into pieces before being disposed of; a flag ceases to be a flag when it is cut into pieces. Members of the military and scout community will assist in the proper ceremonial procedure. Performance of the National Anthem and other such patriotic music by members of a military band would be a spectacular addition to this event. We would love the attendance and participation of our local USO and VFW. Good Shepherd Church will provide the use of the parking lot for the event, bathrooms if needed, help with sharing the news of this event, and extend invitations to the congregation. Thank you for your consideration in allowing us to host this honorable event. We would like to extend invitations to the entire congregation as well as members of the active and retired military in our community and our local ROTC at Olympic High School. Please RSVP so that we may prepare accordingly. Respectfully Yours, Crew 167
