Description
Did you hear? We’re Here! Come unleash your inner drag queen (or king) while celebrating belonging through the transformative power of drag. With more than 4% of San Diego’s population identifying as LGBTQ+, it’s imperative to shine a spotlight on their stories. That is exactly what San Diego State University's School of Journalism and Media Studies is doing with its Screening Circle event every semester. This semester, Screening Circle will spotlight the LGBTQ+ community by screening an episode from HBO’s original series “We’re Here.” The series stars well-known drag queens Eureka O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen and Shangela as they tour the country helping small-town LGBTQ+ residents step outside their comfort zone by producing a local drag show in each town they visit. The event will stream the second episode from season two of “We’re Here,” filmed in Temecula, our neighbor. You will be able to engage in a panel discussion with cast members from the show and discuss the themes prevalent in the series' episodes. Below are our amazing featured panelists. James, an often misgendered young trans man, navigating neurodiversity. Jake & Brad, a gay couple living in Temecula. Michelle, a Christian influencer and mother of Jake. Grab your friends and head over to the Tula Community Center to discuss these important topics and for an evening of fun. Doors open at 3 p.m. with games, trivia, food and raffle prizes available. Experience live drag, as drag queen Amber St. James hosts and performs. Make new friends and be a catalyst for change at this year’s event. RSVP is recommended to secure your seat at the screening. This event will adhere to SDSU COVID safety policies. As of now, this means campus guests should: Show your “cleared on campus” green medallion via the SDSU HealtheConnect.Attest to either being vaccinated or having a negative COVID-19 test.Wear a mask indoors.
