Joliet Man Faces Drug Homicide Charge: Glasgow

JOLIET, IL — The Will County State's Attorney's Office of Jim Glasgow has filed its first drug-induced homicide charge in 2022. On Thursday morning, 30-year-old Joliet resident Dakota A. Smith was charged with drug-induced homicide and two other felony drug charges involving Fentanyl. The Will County Sheriff's Office conducted the investigation that led to Thursday's criminal charges. The crime happened back on March 6, 2019, according to court records. Smith lives in the 3100 block of Joliet's September Drive. As of Thursday afternoon, he was not taken into custody. Joliet Patch has reached out to the Will County Sheriff's Office and the State's Attorney's Office for additional information surrounding the 2019 death investigation. In January 2021, Joliet police arrested Smith at the Route 59 Walmart on felony charges of retail theft and two counts of possession of controlled substances. In that case, Smith hired a criminal defense lawyer from St. Charles. In the Joliet Walmart case, Smith is scheduled to have a plea hearing April 2 in front of Judge Daniel Rippy in Courtroom 402.
