ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst Hospital has treated nearly 3,000 patients testing positive for the coronavirus since March 2020, according to its numbers. This week, Patch asked the hospital for its breakdown by age for coronavirus patients. The hospital responded with the numbers: Age groupNumber of patients0-17518-3437035-4942350-6478665-7455375+748 As with the rest of the country, older people are more likely to be hospitalized for the coronavirus. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 281 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19 have died at Elmhurst Hospital. In the debates on Elmhurst Patch's comment boards, one commenter asked about the percentage of Elmhurst Hospital's patients who went to the hospital for other ailments, but then incidentally tested positive for the coronavirus. Patch asked the hospital about that number, but it did not provide the information. Last month, though, the New York Times wrote that several New York hospitals reported that half to two-thirds of their patients tested positive for COVID-19 after showing up for other reasons. These numbers were cited during the surge as the result of the coronavirus' latest variant, omicron, which is considered less severe.
