ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY — Laura Gillen, the former Town of Hempstead supervisor, is running for congress. Gillen, who became the first Democrat to serve as the town's top elected official in 2017, has her sights on Washington. She is campaigning for Kathleen Rice's 4th Congressional District seat. Rice said she would not seek reelection after four terms. Nassau County Legislator Siela Bynoe (D-Westbury) also announced her candidacy last weekend. Gillen, 52, lost her bid for reelection in Hempstead to Republican Don Clavin. Since that political setback in 2019, Gillen did work as an adjunct professor at Hofstra Law School.
