Meet Nala, a 3 year old Yorkie and Norfolk Terrier mix. Nala originally came into a high kill shelter in central California from a severe hoarding case and was only a year old and completely unsocialized. She was then adopted by an older woman who's dementia and parkinsons disease eventually resulted in Nala being neglected due to her new owners physical inability to care for either of them. Nala is now shy but incredibly sweet and loves spending time with her people the most. She enjoys long car rides and can walk well without a leash when she's accustom to her new family. She has been around small dogs, large dogs, cats, chickens, and small children. Nala can sometimes be defensive with high energy large dogs that try and force her to play or are too rough with her. She weighs in at only 5.5lbs so that is an understandable reaction from such a small girl. She does well being held and loves snuggling up under the covers. She would be an ideal apartment dog or travel companion. Nala's only major drawbacks are that she does not know how to signal when she needs to potty due to her traumatic history. She will go potty outside but needs to be let out on a consistent schedule so she doesn't have accidents in the house. She is kennel trained though with her dependency because of the neglect she does do better when she is able to just accompany you. Nala will bark at doorbells or knocking but otherwise is not a "barky" dog and is normally very quiet. If this behavior is not desirable she does correct with gentle scolding and positive reinforcement for her quiet reactions but when she enters a new home this behavior will restart until she is comfortable again. Nala will need her teeth cleaned soon due to her age and being a small dog.
