A retired United States District Judge and the first African American civil rights attorney for the US Department of Justice will select members for West Contra Costa Unified School District's Independent Redistricting Commission. The commission will review and possibly redraw the boundaries for the five school board trustee areas.
Judge Thelton Henderson, a 1962 UC Berkeley law school graduate, will select the seven-member commission. The District needs one member from each of its five trustee areas plus two members that live outside of WCCUSD's boundaries but within Contra Costa County to serve on the commission.
The commission will use 2020 Census data to review and possibly redraw the District's five school board trustee areas for future school board elections. Applications for the commission are due Monday, Nov. 30 and are available on the District's website at www.wccusd.net/redistrictingcommission.
The District moved from at-large elections to trustee area elections this year. According to unofficial results from the November 3 elections, District voters elected four new trustees based on where they live in five trustee areas. The fifth trustee area saw board member Mister Phillips run unopposed in Trustee Area 3.
