Description

Every fractures are unique, one of a kind. You will learn how to mend damaged ceramics, and more. This is an in-person workshop in Portland, Oregon. Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is a hundreds years old Japanese craftsmanship to repair ceramics. Fractures are no longer flaws but are beauty elements. This philosophy is often taught as embracing imperfections in our life, the beauty of human flaws. During the 2.5 hours workshop, you will learn how to repair ceramics with the modern methods - using epoxy and putty to mend damaged pieces then finishing the joints with gold powder, while the traditional method requires more skills and time to work on and extra care. This method is used professionally for museum grade ceramic/pottery restoration. Workshop is taught by Emi Joyce, who used to be a full time bench jeweler and is currently a Kintsugi restorer and natural dyer. With her lifetime craft skills, you will learn how to repair ceramics with proper tools/materials, tips and techniques. She currently is a natural dyer and Kintsugi ceramic restorer. But probably being a mother of a preschooler is the main task of her daily life. She grows dyeable and edible plants in her little garden, forages plants and dyes fabrics with them. Since she was little her creation is all about 衣食住: clothing, food and housing/life. Not only creating by her own, also fixing, mending, and repurposing damaged things to give them longer life.
