Description

The fibers, fabrics, and patterns of labor represent a fascinating story of both continuity and change. Weaver Marjie Thompson of Maine has studied the handcraft of weaving as it was practiced over the millennia and around the globe. Here, she discusses New England and Mid-Atlantic weaving traditions before the era of water and steam powered textile mills. The fibers, fabrics, and patterns of labor represent a fascinating story of both continuity and change. This event accompanies the exhibit Woven Together: Weavers' Guild of Boston Celebrates a Century of Makers, running April 6 – December 31, 2022. This event is supported by the Lowell Institute and a grant from the Waltham Cultural Council. Proof of vaccination and face masks required. This program will also be livestreamed on the Museum’s YouTube Channel. Located on the scenic banks of the Charles River in the historic 1814 Boston Manufacturing Company textile mill, CRMII is on the National Register of Historic Places as America’s first factory. Hands-on exhibits feature American innovation and invention from 1812 to the present day, with exhibits on Waltham’s Boston Manufacturing Company, the Metz Company, the Waltham Watch Company, W.H. Nichols & Sons, and Orient bicycles from the Waltham Manufacturing Company.
