Description

Come learn about the lives of many important Atlantans while enjoying beautiful sculptures and historic structures Come learn about the lives of many important Atlantans like Joel Chandler Harris, Lemuel Pratt Grant, Donald Lee Hollowell, Asa Candler and Harriett Harwell Wilson High while enjoying beautiful sculptures and historic structures. Tours will include the 1890 Gatehouse and, time-permitting, the massive Spanish Plateresque Westview Abbey and chapel. Prepare to be awestruck by the beauty and many layers of history this site represents. When Westview opened in October of 1884 with nearly six-hundred acres of land, it was designed to be the premier cemetery in the Southeast. It is still an active cemetery with more than 125,000 interments. Westview remains the largest cemetery in the Southeast and one of the largest non-profit cemeteries in the United States. Please meet in the parking lot outside the gatehouse. The tour will last approximately two hours and consists of a 1.5 mile walk (with one steep hill). Public restrooms are not available. All Phoenix Flies programs adhere to current City of Atlanta health and safety guidelines. All guests, program partners, and employees must wear CDC approved masks for the duration of their visit. The Atlanta Preservation Center is the City’s private non-profit preservation organization. Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Preservation Center promotes the preservation of Atlanta's architecturally, historically and culturally significant buildings, neighborhoods and landscapes through education and advocacy. We are excited for our 19th year of Phoenix Flies, a three-week city-wide celebration of living landmarks. Created in 2003, Phoenix Flies provides an opportunity to learn about, celebrate and strengthen Atlanta’s historic and cultural assets. These events, taking place March 5-27, will be live on February 18!
