Mother Of Trayvon Martin Will Speak To Local Libraries

WAYLAND, MA — A coalition of local libraries will host Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, for a discussion about violence against children and how to build safer communities. Fulton, a Florida resident, will speak during a virtual event hosted by libraries in Wayland, Belmont, Lincoln, Norwood and Ashland. Martin was shot and killed on Feb. 26, 2012, in Sanford, Fla. The 17-year-old was walking home from a convenience store when he was confronted by homeowner George Zimmerman. Martin's killing sparked nationwide protests over racial violence — a movement that continued with the recent murders of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery. "[Fulton's] message not only appeals to people's hearts as it relates to children, but is also one of hope and change, exemplified by her personal experiences and endeavors," the Wayland Free Public Library said in a description of Fulton's talk. "As a mother, she inspires audiences to continuously educate their children about civil rights and to help them feel accepted as part of an ever-changing society. An honest and relatable speaker, Fulton always looks forward sharing her powerful message with everyone from colleges and legal professionals to community and family organizations, and all other proponents of social justice." The event with Sybrina Fulton will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday via Zoom. The talk is open to anyone, not just library patrons.
