NORTHPORT, NY — Petunia and Lulu, a pair of 13-year-old bonded sisters, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week. The duo was rescued as kittens on the day they were due to be euthanized because of overcrowding in a shelter, according to Lora Wild, a volunteer with the cat rescue association. "The girl who was supposed to put them down instead snuck them in her pockets and ran," Wild said. The girl's mother was allergic to cats, so the girl brought them to the home of a family friend and her young daughter, according to Wild. A loving home was provided to Petunia and Lulu. The cats' mother died of COVID-19, and they suddenly found themselves in need of a new home, Wild said. "These girls may be considered seniors to most," Wild said. "With the exception of having to take a thyroid pill every day, they are healthy. They are sassy and they are silly. They can be bashful and loving. They love toys and playing. They love to nap with you and to listen to music. They love to look outside at the birds flying by. They have great appetites and love their treats. There is nothing different about them from a kitten except for their age. All they want to do is be a part of a family. They had that for so many years and came to us confused. The day we took them from the only home they ever knew, they cried." They are currently in a loving foster home, and the pair is showing they still have a kitten's attitude. "Please don't count them out because of their age, they still have so much life and love to give," Wild said. "When you adopt a pet, we never truly know how many years one of our furry friends have with us. Some of them leave us much too soon and some of them live to a ripe old age. No matter how many more years these two have left in them we just want them to spend it happy and loved. Isn't that what everyone wants? We know that there is a home out there for these special girls." Petunia and Lulu are spayed, have all their shots, are litter box-trained, and micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative. If you are interested in meeting Petunia and Lulu, you can head to the Northport Cat Rescue Association website and fill out an application to let them know you would like to meet them or any of the other kittens and cats.
