WAKEFIELD, MA — Smith's Drug Store, the family-owned pharmacy that has been part of the community for over a century, has been acquired by Waltham-based pharmacy Pelmeds, it was announced Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed. Smith's retail location at 390 Main St. at the end of the month. Its business will transition into Pelmeds' home delivery service of prescription drugs and over-the-counter products known as PelmedsHOME. "We look forward to serving Smith's Drug customers with the same high level of care and quality as part of the Pelmeds family," Pelmeds President Bhuren Patel said in a release. "Our company has a similarly long legacy as an independent pharmacy, going back more than 75 years, and we are confident that Smith's Drug customers will be well served by our personalized service and model for optimizing delivery to their home." Smith's owner and pharmacist Maryesther Fournier is retiring after nearly 30 years. "It has been a true pleasure serving generations of patients and customers from Wakefield and beyond," Fournier said. "I am thrilled to have found a new pharmacy owner with the same independent spirit and personalized service that will enable the legacy of Smith's Drug to live on in a new form."
