Westport Police Officer Prevents Man From Jumping Off Bridge

WESTPORT, CT — A Westport police officer prevented a man from jumping off a bridge while passing through Fairfield on his way to work Wednesday morning, according to police. In a news release, Police Lt. Dave Wolf said the officer, Brian Meraviglia, was traveling over the Redding Road overpass in Fairfield around 6:45 a.m. when he noticed a man leaning over the side of the bridge. Wolf said it seemed clear to Meraviglia the man's intention was to jump onto the Merritt Parkway below, so the officer got out of his car and started speaking with the man, who Wolf noted was "obviously distraught." As they talked, Meraviglia was able to get close to the man, grab him and move him away from the bridge. Once the man was in a safe location, Meraviglia worked to comfort him and provide emotional support with the help of a good samaritan who was passing by the area, Wolf said. The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation, Wolf said. Fairfield police officers trained to aid people experiencing an emotion crisis, as well as State Police troopers, also responded to the area. Police Chief Foti Koskinas said he was extremely proud of Meraviglia and noted his quick actions likely prevented a tragic outcome.
