Nanuet Hit-and-Run Victim Dies, Police Add Felony Charge

NANUET, NY — A man working a garbage collection route on Second Avenue died Sunday, two days after being hit by a car. The driver found by Clarkstown police afterward now faces two felony charges. Police called to the scene at 6:05 a.m. Friday said they found one man lying in the road and another sitting on the curb in pain, experiencing difficulty breathing. Both victims were treated by CPD officers, Rockland Paramedics and Spring Hill Ambulance responders before being taken to the hospital. The driver of the garbage truck told police that he heard a loud crash as the two victims were crossing the street to collect trash cans, and that the southbound vehicle that struck them kept going. Detectives identified a vehicle and suspect. Christain Lemus-Vasquez, 29, of Spring Valley was charged Friday with operator leaving scene of serious physical injury accident, a felony. He was arraigned and released. Then the Clarkstown Police Police Department was notified by Westchester Medical Centerstaff that on Sunday, Estibe Bustos Ceballos died from the injuries he had sustained. Due to his death, Lemus-Vasquez was also charged with operator leaving the scene of the accident resulting in death (felony). Lemus-Vasquez voluntarily came to Clarkstown Police headquarters on Wednesday where hewas arraigned in Town of Clarkstown Justice Court on the upgraded charge. He was granted $5,000 bail and is due to return to court on a future date. It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
