Drunk Driving Crash In Marshfield Sends State Trooper To Hospital

MARSHFIELD, MA — A Massachusetts State Trooper is in the hospital after he was struck head-on by an impaired driver Tuesday night. According to the State Police Association of Massachusetts, the trooper was on his way home in an unmarked cruiser when he was hit at around 11:30 p.m. on Standish Street. The trooper, who police say has been with the H-Troop Detective Unit for over 10 years, was taken to South Shore Hospital and is expected to be okay, police said. The driver, later identified as Benjamin Piper, was charged with operating under the influence. He was released a few hours later on a $240 cash bail and arraigned Wednesday in Plymouth District Court. The judge ordered Piper to undergo alcohol screening and left it up to the Registry of Motor Vehicles to decide if his license will be suspended. "Our thoughts this morning are with our Trooper, his wife, his young children, and their family," the State Police union posted on Facebook. "This incident yet again reminds us of the dangers our members face daily while serving the Commonwealth. Our message to the public this morning is simple. DRIVE SOBER - there is no excuse." Piper is due back in court on April 21. No additional information was immediately available.
