'Mod & Merry' Farnsworth House Holiday Tours End Sunday

PLANO, IL — Mod & Merry holiday tours of the Farnsworth House in Plano will come to an end this weekend after three final days of exterior home tours. Because of the coronavirus, visitors will not be allowed to go inside the home this year. Even still, the home's 1955 refurnishing, along with mid-century modern holiday decor, are sure to please. According to the Farnsworth House website, attendees will be treated to a half-mile walk around the exterior of the fully-lit home and a visit to the refreshed museum shop. Tours are offered at 4 and 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Because the 4 p.m. tour on Sunday is sold out, hopeful Sunday visitors must purchase a ticket for the 6 p.m. time slot. Tickets are $15 each. Guests are reminded to dress for a lengthy walk and outdoor weather conditions. They're also reminded to wear masks when indoors or near other people. Built as a vacation home for Dr. Edith Farnsworth, the house was designed by architect Mies van der Rohe and is considered one of the most important examples of the Modern style in the United States, according to the house's website. It was purchased by The National Trust for Historic Preservation and select Chicago leaders in 2003 to preserve the home and keep it in its original location near the Fox River. "The calm stillness of the man-made object contrasts also with the subtle movements, sounds, and rhythms of water, sky and vegetation," the website states.
