GROTON, CT — A man was injured in a car vs. pedestrian accident in Groton on Tuesday night, according to police. Police received the call at 8:17 p.m. reporting the crash at Route 12 and Crystal Lake Road. The pedestrian was identified as Matthew Bell, 21, of Groton. Emergency responders located him on the grassy area east of Route 12. Bell was conscious but not alert and had noticeable injuries. He was transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital for treatment of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver, Margaret Duval, 64, of Gales Ferry, remained on scene to assist officers with the investigation. Police said the investigation found that Duval was driving her 2018 Chevrolet Equinox north on Route 12. She passed through the intersection with Crystal Lake Road when Bell ran across Route 12 from the west side and into Duval's path of travel, according to police. Bell was struck by Duval's vehicle and thrown to the east side of Route 12. Police said weather conditions at the time of the wreck were "extremely poor with heavy rain and wind." Bell was not using a marked crosswalk at the time. Duval and a witness traveling directly behind her told police that the traffic light at Route 12 and Crystal Lake Road was green at the time of the crash. The accident remains under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the wreck should call police at 860-441-6712.
