BRIDGEPORT, CT — Bridgeport's mask mandate will be lifted starting Wednesday, according to a city news release. The relevant executive order was issued Aug. 10 and required all people in the city to wear face masks while indoors at any public place or in any business. The masks were particularly useful during the emergence of coronavirus variants and in protecting those who were medically vulnerable or ineligible for the vaccine, Mayor Joe Ganim noted in the news release. "I explained that we would review the data and make decisions best for our city," Ganim said. "Based on the numbers in Bridgeport and the surrounding communities, we believe it is time to lift the mandate. I must add that this does not mean that the virus is over, and that vaccines remain our best line of defense as we cannot predict who will contract the virus or its severity." Bridgeport's health department will continue to host free vaccination clinics every Friday, and the city will remain a "mask friendly" community, according to the news release.
