SUMMIT, NJ — Summit Fire Department reported a fire in the kitchen of a third-floor apartment at the Summit Senior Housing building Tuesday afternoon, according to the City of Summit.
On arrival at 12 Chestnut Street, crews found fire in an oven extending to surrounding kitchen cabinets. Firefighters were able to effectively knock down the fire and contain it to the kitchen area. The fire was declared under control at 1 p.m.
Several residents experienced minor injuries. They were treated at the scene and released. No injuries to firefighters were reported.
Springfield Volunteer EMS responded to the scene, along with the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad and Chatham Emergency Squad. Mutual aid was provided by Hillside, Linden, and Union fire departments.
Station coverage was provided by Cranford, Scotch Plains and Union Fire Departments.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Summit Fire Department Investigation Unit.
