Two LHS Wrestlers Earn State Medals At IHSA Finals

LEMONT, IL — Lemont High School's wrestling program has produced two more state medalists, the school said in a news release. At the 2022 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Individual State Finals, which were contested Feb. 17-19 at the State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois, seniors Moe Khalil (182 pounds) and Alex Tagler (170 pounds) each earned their first state medals. Khalil and Tagler were part of head coach Erik Murry's five-man state finals contingent that also included seniors Evan Schiffman (138 pounds), Tyler Wilms (220 pounds) and junior Mike Jabaay (160 pounds), all of whom finished one match short of earning a state medal, the school said. Khalil, Schiffman, Tagler and Wilms all were in the starting lineup for Lemont when it captured the 2020 IHSA Class 2A Dual Team State Championship. Tagler (35-5) closed his career by placing fourth at 170 pounds, the school said. He won three of five state finals matches and reached the state semifinals. Prior to the state finals, he won IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles. Tagler was making his second state finals appearance after qualifying at 170 pounds as a sophomore in 2020; that season he also won IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles, according to the school. Khalil (35-6) made his individual state finals debut and placed fifth at 182 pounds. He reached the state semifinals and won three of five matches, including an exciting 1-0 decision in the fifth place match, the school said. Khalil also captured IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles this season. Schiffman (35-9) split four matches at 138 pounds, winning once by fall and once by major decision, the school said. He was making his third individual state finals appearance. In 2019, he won IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional titles on his way to a fourth-place finish at 106 pounds. In 2020, he qualified at 120 pounds. Wilms (31-5) won two of four matches at 220 pounds in his individual state finals debut. He won IHSA Regional and IHSA Sectional crowns on the way to his state finals appearance, according to the school. Jabaay (25-10) won twice by major decision in four contests at 160 pounds in his state finals debut. He won an IHSA Regional title this season, the school said.
