GENEVA, IL — Kent Mutchler, the superintendent of schools at Geneva District 304, is among three candidates in the running for superintendent of a school district in Dubuque, Iowa. If hired, Mutchler will oversee Dubuque Community School District. As the seventh-largest school district in Iowa, the district is comprised of 13 elementary schools, three middle schools and three high schools. Mutchler's finalist interview took place Monday, which students at public schools had off in observance of President's Day. A team of district staff, parents and community members conducted the meeting, and the candidate ended his day with an interview with the Board of Education, according to a news release from the Iowa district. Mutchler, who has four degrees, including a doctor of education from Drake University, has worked as superintendent at the Geneva school district since 2006. The administrator began his career teaching social studies at a high school in Clarion, Iowa, and he worked his way up to become superintendent at several districts throughout the state. Chace Ramey, who currently serves as deputy superintendent for the Iowa City Community School District, a position he has held since 2018. Amy Hawkins, who has been the chief human resources officer for the Dubuque district since 2019, is the third candidate. The search was narrowed down to the three professionals from a pool of 16 applications, coming from seven states. "The Board was very pleased with the high-quality caliber of the candidate pool," officials said in a news release. "Eight candidates had previous superintendent experience, six candidates had central office experience, and all candidates had significant administrative experience." The Board of Education conducted screening interviews with seven semifinalists before announcing Mutchler, Hawkins and Ramey as the finalists.
